On 9 April 2009, the Amazonian indigenous peoples began a day of protest calling for the abolition of legislative decrees that are detrimental to their collective interests.
The Amazonian province of Bagua, in the north of Peru, was one of the main areas of protest.
The people were violently removed by the police force, resulting in a confrontation that ended with 34 people dead, 24 of them police officers and 10 civilians, and almost two hundred wounded, many of them shot.
